Field Day update: What a great way to begin quarter 4 (though it was a tad late due to poor weather). The whole 6th grade team rotated through 5 games and a rest station. We played Capture the  Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, Steal the Bacon, Clean out your kitchen, and Soccer. A good time was had by all!

In Language Arts, we discussed ending for our realistic fiction short stories. Writers consider various endings. How would the situation turn out in real life? Rethink "easy" endings. We may need to relook at our due date as we now have the Forward State Standardized test next Wednesday-Friday.

1. Can we have snacks on the bus? It is up to the bus driver
2. Backpacks allowed on bus but you can't bring in museum- can be left on bus though
3. Electronics- Not on the bus at all BUT you can use them for pictures at the museum. If your chaperone feels you are using it too often and not appropriately, they will ask you to put it away.

Language Arts: Making our scenes stronger for our realistic piece, is hard work. We started that work today in class. See the qualities of a strong fictional draft bullets below.

Qualities of a Strong Fictional Draft

o   Setting establishes what kind of world the characters live in

o   Details pull readers in to the story

o   Conflict between or within characters shows us what’s at stake in the story

o   Actions and dialogue reveal character’s traits, emotions and motivations

o   Dialogue conveys emotion when a character speaks

Language Arts: Today we took our realistic fiction characters for a "test drive." In order to  learn how our characters will respond in a number of everyday settings, we put them in the lunchroom, in the hallway, and at home right after school. We made sure that our scenes included: action, internal and external dialogue, motivations and obstacles. If you need to learn more about your character, please try out some more scenes for homework.

Language Arts: Realistic Fiction has began! We looked at possible topics that are realistic for a middle school aged student. Students are struggling keeping in mind that this is SHORT fiction: 2-3 scenes & 2-4 characters. See some topic ideas above.
